Dentures or Dental Implants: Which Restoration Option is Best?

We provide thorough consults for patients who want to review and discuss which tooth replacement option is the right one for them: dentures or implants?

Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Benefits of Each

Dentures are full arches of artificial teeth that are custom-fitted to the patient’s mouth and function like natural teeth. Dentures have been around for a long time and are a good choice for people who are missing many teeth in one arch. Dentures are also the less expensive option of the two because dental implants involve newer technology and also require more surgical time to install.  Dentures require more care and more frequent replacement than dental implants. Dentures must be removed, cleaned and cemented back into your mouth every day with an adhesive that can be messy.  They can also slip out when you are talking or eating if not fitted or cemented correctly.  Dentures often need to be replaced because the shape of your mouth can change without teeth to stimulate new jawbone growth.

Dental implants, on the other hand, begin with small titanium posts that are surgically embedded in the jawbone to serve as the roots of individual missing teeth or to permanently support a full arch of missing teeth. A dental crown, a kind of prosthetic tooth, is mounted atop the post and offers the same functionality as natural teeth. Implants feel, look, and function the same as your natural teeth, but unlock dentures, promote the growth of new, healthy bone and gum tissue. This means that implants bond with the jawbone, becoming more secure in their placement over time while also preventing bone and gum deterioration as can happen over time with dentures. Implants do not need to be removed for cleaning, giving you the low-maintenance lifestyle that comes with natural teeth.

However, Dr. Moore or your area dentist can insert four titanium dental implants to support a full arch of missing teeth in a treatment called implant-secured dentures. These dentures do not require removal for cleaning or any special maintenance.

Are Dental Implants Right For Me?

Although dental implants are the preferred procedure for replacing missing teeth, implants are not always an immediate option for all patients. This procedure requires a healthy and strong underlying jawbone to support the implants. If you have already begun experiencing bone loss due to missing teeth, bone graft surgeries may be necessary to reinforce the jawbone prior to the placement of dental implants.

Patients who are missing multiple teeth might want to consider implant-supported dentures as a way to preserve jawbone health while also replacing an entire arch of missing or damaged teeth.
